Description
Impressively etched in multiple patterns, including several different birds, cacti, insects and geometric designs, this polychrome jar was created by hand by Mata Ortiz potter Mariela Tena. The rim of the piece is painted in a red band, followed by a much thicker black band, followed by yet another narrow red band, each of which features either etched geometric patterns or geometric designs plus various insects, including butterflies, dragonflies, and lady bugs. The majority of the body of the piece features a buff backdrop etched with various cacti and birds, including owls, a roadrunner, and quail. The bottom of the piece features an additional thick, black band etched with reoccurring geometric patterns. 6 1/4″ tall x 5 1/4″ wide.
