Description

Created by hand by late Hopi carver, and one of a handful of female kachina artists, Jocelyn Vote, this impressive doll depicts a deer.  The deer stands atop a wooden base, one leg lifted slightly up and extended forward, as if taking a step.  The deer holds a stick in one hand and a rattle in the other, its bottom half covered in a brown, red and black painted garment, its upper body painted in green and white in a zig zag pattern and finished with a black sash.  The head of the deer is painted green with red and black accents, foliage surrounding its neck, with delicate feathers extending outward and upward from the top of the head and antlers finishing the piece, extending upward.  The deer kachina doll is said to dance to increase his kind, ensuring abundance. Piece is signed with Jocelyn’s “Kocha Hon Mana, as well as the year, 1996. 10″ tall x 2 1/2″ wide x 2 1/2” deep.
