Description

Late Hopi carver Jocelyn Vote, one of only a handful of female kachina carvers, created this stunning Crow Mother kachina doll entirely by hand.  Crow Mother stands atop a round, thick wooden base, one foot lifted off the ground and slightly forward, as if she’s taking a step.  Crow Mother’s shoulders are covered in a wooden shawl painted in black, green and red accents, while her lower half is covered in a skirt painted entirely black with red and green details.  She holds rattles in one hand and a cradleboard in the other, while her face is painted turquoise with black and white designs and is finished with feathers along both sides, protruding upward and outward, and along the top of the head, extending forward.  Crow Mother is said to be the mother of all the kachina, and the guardian of children.  11 1/4″ tall x 3 1/2″ wide x 3 1/4″ deep.
