Description
Carved by hand by Hopi/Laguna artist Ray Jose, this unique kachina doll depicts both a red beard longhair and a sun kachina. Both kachinas extend upward leaning slightly to one side from two part base, the bottom of which features a plain, oval piece of wood and the next level carved into what appears to be a piece of pottery or a basket, showcasing carved step, weather and geometric patterns painted in black and orange. The red beard longhair features black hair atop the head and running down its back, with a red beard along the front just below various feather patterns. Its face is painted turquoise with black eyes and a feather finishes the top of the head. The sunface kachina extends slightly higher than the red beard longhair, its front painted in green and black panels with red and white accents, its head surrounded in feathers. The sunface’s face is painted in turquoise, red and yellow with red, black and white accents. The longhair kachina doll is considered a bringer of rain, while the sunface is said to bring warmth and shelter for the elderly, a bright future for the young. 11 1/2″ tall x 3″ wide x 2 1/8″ deep.
