Description
Carved by hand by Hopi artist Wilford Duwyenie, this impressive kachina doll depicts an Ogre Maiden. The ogre stands atop a round wooden base, garments covering its entire body including moccasins, a shawl, a skirt and a belt, with a pack upon its back, knife in one hand, and staff in the other. The ogre maiden’s hair is parted at the center and flows down both sides of the head and down the back, additional hair coming off the chin, upon which the ogre’s tongue rests. The ogre is finished with a black face with yellow and turquoise accents, and while the staff is not removable, the knife is. In Hopi culture, the ogre is considered a disciplinarian of children. 11 3/8″ tall x 3 1/4″ wide x 3 1/2″ deep.
