Description
Expertly carved by Hopi artist Wilmer Kaye, this impressive kachina doll depicts a White Bear. The bear stands atop a round wooden base, another round, wooden, textured piece atop it, as if the bear is standing on uneven terrain. The bear’s face is painted white with red and black accents, including paws on each of its cheeks, while its head is finished with two groupings of three intricately carved feathers at the top, each painted in either red, or black and white. The bear bares its teeth, while white fur surrounds its neck, and carved clothing covers a small portions of its chest and back, as well as the entirety of its waist and lower half. A beautiful sash surrounds the bear’s waist painted in what appears to be a concho belt and extending off to one side, painted in beautiful green, black, red and blue traditional geometric patterns. The bear is finished with moccasins, and holds a rattle in one hand and a bow in the other. The bear is said to symbolize courage and strength, and to represent great power to cure the sick. 11 1/2″ tall x 3 1/2″ wide x 4 1/2″ deep.
