What is a Fetish?
Native American Indian fetishes are objects believed to have magic powers. They may take any form and be made of any material.
Native American Indian fetishes are commonly carved stone or antler and take shapes of animals. Those who create fetishes do not dictate the form. Rather, the material (and the magic power within it) suggests the form; the shape organically develops without a predetermined plan of the carver.
The fetish’s power can be obtained by the holder by placing the fetish’s nostrils to one’s mouth and taking deep breaths.
Care for Stone Fetishes
A fetish can be owned by an individual, a family, clan or an entire Native American Indian Pueblo or tribe. However, the care of the fetish is always one individual’s responsibility.
Fetishes are believed to feed on cornmeal while they are kept in a special pot or pouch. Ground turquoise may be added to the fetish’s cornmeal.
Fetishes are often adorned with turquoise, coral and other gemstones. Their care also includes admiration from those it is supposed to protect and aid.
The better a fetish is cared for, the better performance it is likely to provide.
The Meaning of Fetishes
Native American Indian stone fetishes commonly take the shape of predators—animals who hunt rather than are hunted. These animals, admired for their strength of spirit and dominance, are believed to have the strongest fetish powers.
While traditions and beliefs do vary among Native American Indian Pueblos and tribes, there are some common meanings and associated colors, directions and properties assigned to each animal fetish.
